Evolving Eevee (for Level 50)

In total, Eevee has 8 evolutions (eevelutions), until now seven of them are obtainable in Pokémon GO: Vaporeon (Water), Jolteon (Electric), Flareon (Fire), Espeon (Psychic), Umbreon (Dark), Leafeon (Grass), Glaceon (Ice) and Sylveon (Fairy).

Evolution names

Dex # Type Evolution Name
134 Vaporeon Rainer
135 Jolteon Sparky
136 Flareon Pyro
196 Espeon Sakura
197 Umbreon Tamao
470 Leafeon Linnea
471 Glaceon Rea
700 Sylveon Kira

With the new update it will be possible for trainers to reach Level 50. One of the requirements for reaching Level 42 will be to evolve Eevee into each of its unique evolutions. But how to do that? Do you also have the feeling that it is always Jolteon or Vaporeon you get when pressing that Evolve button? Well, you're not alone. The good thing is: There is a way for you to obtain all evolution forms of Eevee. This way uses so called evolution names and works like this: By giving the Eevee you want to evolve a new name the icon next to the Evolve button will change from a question mark to the shadow of your desired Eevee evolution. But caution! Not any name will work. There is only one special evolution name for every eeveelution. You find the names in the table below. But wait! And there's another thing to consider: You can use each evolution name only one time! So choose wisely.

regular evolving

Evolving Eevee without the name trick requires some luck, walking 20km in total and some lures.
Here is an overview:
  • Jolteon, Flareon and Vaporeon: Evolve randomly
  • Umbreon: Walk 10km as buddy, evolve during night
  • Espeon: Walk 10km as buddy, evolve during day
  • Leafeon: Evolve during active Mossy Lure
  • Glaceon: Evolve during active Glacial Lure

Jolteon, Flareon, Vaporeon

The trickiest and easiest thing at the same time is it to evolve Jolteon, Flareon or Vaporeon without the name trick. Why? Because you only have to press the Evolve button and hope that it right away evolves into your desired form. If not, then you have to try it again on another Eevee. And maybe again on another Eevee. This random evolution game can be pretty exhausting and, let's face it, scary. Especially when you want to evolve a shiny or hundo Eevee into a specific one of that trio. That's why it might be a good idea to save the name trick for Jolteon, Flareon or Vaporeon for when you have a shiny Eevee or another special one (maybe a costumed with good IVs or idk) and not to use it just "to have them evolved".
With the new Level 50 Cap Niantic introduced a new form of level requirements. Next to gaining XP it is now required to fulfill certain research tasks. As mentioned above, one of the tasks to reach Level 42 is to evolve Eevee into each of its unique evolutions. When you already used the evolution name on your Jolteon, Flareon or Vaporeon you should consider saving some Eevees for an evolution marathon.

Umbreon, Espeon

Easier to handle are the evolutions of Umbreon and Espeon. Let the Eevee you want to evolve be your buddy and walk 10 km with it. You don't have to feed it and be on the map for the kilometers to count. Just walk with it until it found to candies (= 10 km). After that and while Eevee being still your buddy you can evolve it into Umbreon or Espeon. When you walked 10 km and it is during day time (your local time) you should see an Espeon shadow next to the Evolve button. Respectively, when you walked 10 km and it is during night time (your local time) you should see an Umbreon shadow next to the Evolve button.
Note: It can happen that you walked 10,0km and you still don't see a shadow of either Espeon or Umbreon next to the Evolution button. Then just walk something like 10,2 km and the shadow should appear.

Leafeon, Glaceon

Way easier to predict are the regular evolutions of Leafeon and Glaceon. You only have to turn a Mossy Lure for Leafeon or a Glacial Lure for Glaceon and evolve your desired Eevee while these lures are active. When you go on the Eevee you want to evolve be sure that the icon next to the Evolve button has changed from a question mark to the shadow of either Leafeon or Glaceon. Only then Eevee will evolve in the specific form.
If the question mark is still there when you want to evolve your Eevee chances are that either the lure has not yet activated or the time that the lure was active is already over. So, in case of a question mark don't eolve the Eevee if you want Leafeon or Glaceon, but make sure that Glacial or Mossy Lures are active first!

Sylveon

Evolving the last Eeveelution, the Fairy-type Sylveon, might take you a while - depending on how much you like and are active with the Pokémon GO Buddy feature. For evolving Eevee into Sylveon you need to collect 70 (Yes: Seventy!) hearts with Eevee as your Buddy. And if you have missed Eevee Community Day, where the amount of hearts for evoling your Eevee was reduced to only seven, then that's a whole lot of hearts you need to collect.

How to collect 70 hearts then with to evolve Eevee into Sylveon? First things first: Make the Eevee you wish to evolve your Buddy Pokémon! Once you chose it as your Buddy there a several ways to earn hearts (To start an interaction with your Buddy just click on the "Play!" button.).

Give your buddy a treat

Select the Berry symbol and choose the berry you want to feed to Eevee. Keep in mind that you have to use either three normal berries (Razz, Nanab or Pinap) or one better berry (Golden Razz, Silver Pinap) to fully feed your Eevee. Alternatively you can feed a Poffin, but those are only obtainable through the PokéShop or sometimes through Special Research Tasks.

Play together

For playing with your Eevee you need to swipe up and down on the face of it. You know that you are doing it correctly when little sparks appear and Eevee makes content face.

Battle together

For this you need to choose Eevee as member of a battling team. It doesn't matter whether you're battling against a Team Rocket Grunt/ Leader, attacking a gym, battling in a Raid or in GO Battle League. Note also that you don't actually have to fight with Eevee, but it only needs to be party of your Battle Party.

Yet again, be aware of the question mark: If the question mark is still showing on the evolution button you aren't done yet with collecting the 70 hearts. Don't click on the button just yet, but interact with your Eevee just a little bit more. Only when the shadow of Sylveon it means that you Eevee Buddy will evolve into Sylveon!

Note that for all current evolutions you will need 175 Eevee candies. With Eevee being a Pokémon of type Normal it is quite easy to find, especially when the weather condition is partly cloudy.
